For East Coast music fans, it’s the most wonderful time of the year. Yes, maybe even better than the holidays: it’s the Halifax Pop Explosion.

From October 20-24, venues across the city will be home to more than 130 bands including electro bangers MSTRKRFT, indie pop sweethearts Mates of State and mashup gurus Girl Talk. Local acts are also well represented with Jenn Grant, In Flight Safety and Dog Day partaking in the festivities.

A music, dance and culture festival, the Explosion started in 1993 and has since hosted acclaimed acts such as The Constantines, The Weakerthans and The Arcade Fire.  The festival will also be home to the Music Matters conference, aimed at discussing issues in the ever-changing music industry, and an independent zine and film fair.

Five must-see shows at the HPX

Make sure to check the full schedule and come back to UNews for in-depth coverage throughout the week.
