Halifax Regional Police issued a statement yesterday warning students to be careful when applying for jobs. Over the past few weeks police have received complaints from students about being tricked into giving away money.
Students have responded to ads looking for a “personal assistant with an overseas company.” They are told by a “senior manager” to deposit company cheques or money orders into their personal bank accounts then wire funds overseas. A few weeks later they get a notice from their bank that the cheque or money order was fraudulent.
Dal, SMU, and MSVU students have been targeted.
